St Kitts and Nevis Takes Zero-Tolerance Approach to Crime and Violence
In a bold move to tackle crime and violence in St Kitts and Nevis, the government has announced a comprehensive plan to address the root causes of the problem. Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew has assured citizens and residents that his administration is taking a zero-tolerance approach to crime and violence, vowing to deal with the issue once and for all.
Comprehensive Plan Launched
The Prime Minister, who serves as Minister of National Security, revealed that a task force has been established to tackle the matter from a public health perspective. Led by Dr Drew himself, the task force includes Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Izben Williams and high-ranking officials from various government sectors, including:
- Ministry of National Security
- Ministry of Education
- Ministry of Social Development
- Prime Minister’s Office
Public Health Approach
Speaking on ZIZ’s radio and television programme The Edge, Dr Drew emphasized that the government is looking at crime and violence as a public health issue, rather than just a law enforcement problem. “For many years we had not implemented such a comprehensive program to deal with crime and violence,” he said. “Some of the things that were done in the past may have even exacerbated the situation.”
Tribute Paid
Dr Drew also paid tribute to the families of two young men who tragically lost their lives earlier this week, offering his most sincere condolences.
Regional Symposium Inspiration
The Prime Minister’s comments come on the heels of a regional symposium on “Crime and Violence as a Public Health Issue” held in Trinidad and Tobago in April. The government is committed to addressing the root causes of crime and violence, rather than just treating its symptoms.
A Safer Society Ahead
With this comprehensive plan, St Kitts and Nevis is taking a significant step towards creating a safer and more stable society for all citizens and residents.
